Summary of Jude
To summarise the Book of Jude is not very difficult, for it follows one vein. The Book, though brief, is packed with endless jewels in the corners and corridors of its verses.
The main thrust of Jude is that of a warning. The warning is against “certain men” (Jude 1:4) who are creeping among God’s people and leading them astray. Not only do such men deny Jesus Christ, but also use God’s grace as an occasion for wickedness. Such wickedness includes sexual sin, disrespect to authority, rebellion against God, complaining, mocking that which ought not to be mocked, and general submission to their lusts. Because such men are well-spoken, they lead others into their sins too. Jude calls the believers to keep themselves in the love of God and rescue those who are falling prey to such men. Jude offers no hope for these men who separate themselves from sound doctrine, righteousness, and true fellowship, but presents them as unsalvageable reprobates.
Jude ends the Book as he started it, with his focus on God. For, God is the only One “able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy” (Jude 1:24), and the only One with the power to help us “refuse the evil, and choose the good” (Isaiah 7:15).
May God help us keep our churches from such men and in the love of God. Praise God for Jude’s warning! Amen!
